KUWAIT CITY, November 24: The Kuwait Institute for Judicial and Legal Studies organized a symposium on Wednesday entitled “The phenomenon of domestic violence, the problem and the solutions”, with the participation of a number of jurists and specialists psychological and social sciences. In her speech, the Secretary General of the Supreme Council for Family Affairs and Deputy Assistant Secretary for Social Development at the Ministry of Social Affairs, Hana Al-Hajri, stressed the need to raise the level of religious and moral awareness in society and to develop media strategies to highlight the seriousness of domestic violence. Al-Hajri explained that the causes of domestic violence are many, including socialization, family disintegration, drug addiction and others, stressing the need for accurate information and statistics that would identify domestic violence as a problem or a phenomenon.

For his part, the director of the Kuwait Center for the Treatment of Drug Addiction and member of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Kuwait, Dr Adel Al-Zaid, said in his speech that domestic violence is not limited to beatings. , it is therefore necessary to understand the behaviors that come under the concept of violence. Dr Al-Zaid added that the beatings are unacceptable, stressing in this regard that it is necessary to raise the level of culture in the society as a whole and to educate its members. For his part, the head of the Department of Psychiatry at Kuwait University College of Medicine, Dr Suleiman Al-Khodari, said violence is a complex phenomenon and cannot be viewed from just one angle. There are several types of violence, including physical, verbal and others that are linked to an individual’s personality and psychological state, explaining that most psychological disorders can lead to violence if left untreated.

Al-Khodari added that in an era where societies have opened up due to electronic openness, corporate culture is seeping into other societies, indicating that discussing any topic related to forensic studies does not mean not so much the need for legislation or law as the need to develop culture and awareness in society and the concerted efforts of various public bodies. In turn, the head of the Juvenile Prosecutor’s Office at the Public Prosecutor’s Office of the Ministry of Justice, Nasser Al-Sumait, said: “The law on domestic violence was enacted more than a year ago, and since then, we have been faced with over, of which 50 percent were lifted and 80 percent are against women, indicating that we are facing a phenomenon mainly of violence against women. Al-Sumait said community policing has a major role to play in dealing with such cases of domestic violence, stressing the importance of preparing police stations to deal with cases of violence. He pointed out that the problem of drug addiction is closely related to the problems of domestic violence, as 80 percent of the cases of violence are related to drug addiction. , (KUNA)
